A displacement reaction is a reaction in which an element reacts with a compound displacing an element from it. A simple representative of the displacement reaction in terms of variables where B is displaced from the original compound, BC and A takes its place as shown below:

A + BC --> AC + B

An example of a chemical reaction is when copper reacts with silver nitrate to produce silver and copper nitrate as shown below:

Cu + 2AgNO3 ---> 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2
